Enhancing Heavy Rain Nowcasting with Multimodal Data: Integrating Radar and Satellite Observations

A recent study highlights the importance of integrating radar and satellite data to improve heavy rain forecasting, especially in urban areas prone to flooding. With only 17.3% of heavy rain events recorded by traditional rain gauges in Germany from 2001 to 2018, this innovative approach could significantly enhance our ability to predict localized rainfall events. This matters because better forecasting can help cities prepare for and mitigate the impacts of urban flooding, ultimately protecting lives and property.
