 What I Built
</h2>

For this challenge, I created a Halloween-themed landing page inspired by spooky aesthetics like haunted houses, glowing pumpkins, and foggy night skies. The page features interactive elements including animated stars, glowing buttons, and a festive footer with a Halloween color palette. I focused on fun, immersive UI design while keeping it fully responsive and user-friendly.

 Journey
</h2>

Building this landing page was a fun and creative challenge. I experimented with CSS animations to bring floating stars and fog effects to life and used custom fonts and colors to enhance the spooky mood.

Some key things I learned and implemented:

Parallax effect background image</li>
<li>
Responsive Modal press R to open and EXC to close</li>
<li>
Responsive design that works on mobile, tablet, and desktop.</li>
<li>
Custom fonts to create a Halloween vibe.</li>
<li>Layering elements with z-index and transparency to add depth to the page.</li>
</ul>

I’m particularly proud of the Interactive Invitation Section, where the glowing links and Halloween color palette create a festive feel without overwhelming the main content.

Next steps I hope to implement:

<li>Adding scroll-triggered animations for elements appearing as you scroll down.</li>
<li>
Sound effects for a more immersive Halloween experience.</li>
<li>Integrating AI-generated spooky text for dynamic landing content.</li>

 Inspiration
</h2>

For my submission, I went for something a little different than the jack-o-lanterns 🎃 and spooky things 👻 we often think about during Halloween. I wanted to create something that captures the essence of what Halloween really means, not just costumes and candy, but remembrance.

Thus, I created a beautiful webpage featuring a flickering candle on a lovely wooden table. It's a simple, peaceful symbol of what Halloween, AKA All Hallows' Eve, really means: the night we remember all those who came before us, and who have now journeyed onward. A candle is such a simple object, yet it carries deep symbolism: light in the darkness 🕯️, warmth 🔥, and memory. Translating that into a webpage allowed me to combine some artistic creativity with CSS and web animation.

This project was primarily CSS-driven, which aligns perfectly with the CSS Art challenge guidelines. Some of the techniques I explored included:

Gradients and layering: Creating the soft glow of the candle flame required multiple layers and subtle gradients to mimic light diffusion.</li>
<li>
Animations and keyframes: The flicker effect is achieved by animating opacity, transform, and shadow offsets to make the flame feel alive.</li>
<li>
Minimal JavaScript: Just enough to add a slight randomness to the flicker, with the star of the show being still pure CSS ⭐.</li>
</ul>

I'm one of those visual learners, I love seeing things actually work. This is one of the reasons I love CSS so much: you change something and something visibly changes. Even after years of working with CSS, this project reminded me how powerful CSS can be for creating fun, realistic effects. I experimented with colours and layering, and the result feels very much alive. It's not perfect and doesn't replace my physical candle, but working with this CSS shows the power of effects.

This project also reinforced a concept that something small (such as a candle, or a small change in the CSS), can be more impactful than overloading a scene with too many details.

CSS Art isn’t always about flashy visuals. It can be about storytelling through code. By combining design sensibilities with CSS techniques, you can create something that resonates emotionally while still impressing technically.

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source. 
Each October, developers from all over the world make their first contributions, fixing bugs, improving documentation, or adding new features to projects that anyone can use. 

For many, it is their first step into real-world collaboration. 
It is how they gain hands-on experience, connect with other developers, and start building the foundation of their careers. 

But whether you joined Hacktoberfest or contributed to an open source project on your own, the message is the same: 
you have already started your journey.

My story started with open source back in 2011-2012, where I joined a community and helped out in different areas. This has led me to endless opportunities and helped me land jobs.

As someone who has interviewed developers, I do not care how many PRs you have made. I care about what they show. 

One thoughtful, well-written contribution tells me:

The future of coding: Cursor, AI, and the rise of backend automation with Appwrite

In October 2024, I started a new role at Pie, a Chicago-based company that is building a platform that makes it easier for people to find things to do and make memories with friends. I was excited to join Pie for a few reasons:

I remember when I started, the only downside that I thought was going to be a point of frustration was that the existing React Native app was built with <a href="https://expo.dev" rel="noopener noreferrer">Expo</a>.
