Cash Flow Underwriting with Bank Transaction Data: Advancing MSME Financial Inclusion in Malaysia
In Malaysia, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) constitute approximately 96.1% of all businesses, highlighting their significant role in the economy. Despite their prevalence, these enterprises frequently face challenges in securing financing through traditional means. A recent study investigates the potential of using bank transaction data as an alternative to conventional credit bureau data for underwriting purposes. This approach aims to provide a more accurate and accessible assessment of MSMEs' financial health. The study suggests that leveraging bank transaction data could enhance financial inclusion for MSMEs by offering lenders better insights into cash flow patterns. Such data-driven underwriting methods may address existing barriers that prevent MSMEs from obtaining necessary funding. Consequently, this development represents a promising step toward improving access to finance for a critical segment of Malaysia's business landscape.
