Gullah Geechee people offered chance to save family properties passed down through generations

South Carolina has enacted the Heirs’ Property Tax Relief Act, signed by Governor Henry McMaster, which aims to protect heirs’ property owners from increased property taxes when resolving ownership disputes or clearing titles. This law is particularly significant for the Gullah Geechee community, descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans, who have faced challenges in maintaining family land.

The act allows families to transfer property titles among heirs without incurring higher taxes, thereby helping them retain land that has been passed down through generations. However, the Gullah Geechee people continue to face significant challenges, including unclear property titles and rising taxes, which threaten their ability to keep their family land.
