A Ranking-Based Optimization Algorithm for the Vehicle Relocation Problem in Car Sharing Services

arXiv — cs.LGWednesday, November 12, 2025 at 5:00:00 AM
The recent study introduces a ranking-based optimization algorithm specifically designed to tackle the Vehicle Relocation Problem in free-floating car-sharing services. By segmenting the service area into zones that reflect similar patterns of vehicle presence and demand, the algorithm enhances strategies for repositioning vehicles and transferring personnel using scooters. Conducted using real-world data from a major car-sharing operator in Poland, the experiments demonstrated significant performance improvements, with average enhancements of 8.44% and 19.6% compared to baseline scenarios and an exact Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. These findings underscore the algorithm's potential to optimize operations in car-sharing services, ultimately leading to more efficient vehicle management and improved service delivery.
