arXiv — cs.CVWednesday, November 12, 2025 at 5:00:00 AM
The introduction of PLUTO-4 marks a significant advancement in the field of pathology foundation models, building on the success of previous models by extending the Pathology-Universal Transformer to a frontier scale. This new model family includes two innovative architectures: the compact and efficient PLUTO-4S, optimized for high-throughput deployment, and the larger PLUTO-4G, designed to maximize representation capacity. Both models were pretrained on a comprehensive dataset comprising 551,164 whole slide images from 137,144 patients, covering over 60 disease types and utilizing more than 100 different stains. Evaluations indicate that PLUTO-4 achieves state-of-the-art performance across various tasks, including tile classification and segmentation, with a notable 11% improvement in dermatopathology diagnosis. This progress not only enhances diagnostic capabilities but also sets new performance frontiers in pathology, demonstrating the potential of AI in transforming healthcare diag…
